Transferring your data produced by microscopes via the network
Version 0.4 du 27/02/2024
I - General information
- Since the end of 2023, all PCs controlling the microscopes on the ImagoSeine platform are connected to the network via optical fiber.
They have a dedicated 1 Gb/s network connection with no bottlenecks to the IJM servers and the Internet.
An effective transfer rate of around 100 megabytes/s is therefore expected.
- The following explains how to transfer the data produced by these microscopes over the network.
- from the microscope's PC, without using an external USB drive
- then, from the PC/Mac in your office
- This is to avoid using external USB drives, which may be slower and require a double transfer.
II - From the PC controlling the microscope
-
Please use
- the FileZilla transfer software and the SFTP protocol
- You are required to use your IJM account username and password: the one used for EasyRequest, eLabFTW, VPN, Seafile, etc.
which is managed via: https://ldap.ijm.fr/
- Two options are available
- Data that we simply want to store in a temporary space in order to sort, organize, and work on it before storing it more permanently.
- Data that we want to secure directly in its entirety on the IJM's store servers (store1,2,3,...) (only for IJM staff)
A - Transfer to a temporary space
- From FileZilla, you must connect using the controls below the ribon ①
- server : micro2scratch -- protocol : SFTP -- port : 22
- login and password : those from your IJM account
- In the right-hand panel (②, destination space)
- DO NOT ENTER ANYTHING at this root
- go to the DATA folder dedicated to your team
- Then you can start the transfer from the microscope PC (③, on the left side of the screen) to the previously selected area.
- IMPORTANT: this space is unlimited in size, but without backup and will be automatically cleared after 3 months.
- This temporary space is accessible from both inside and outside the Institute in exactly the same way, under the name micro2scratch.ijm.fr.
It can therefore be used by people outside the Institute.
B - Transfer to the secure server store1 (only for IJM staff)
- It should be noted that this storage service is highly secure (3 copies of data) and durable (long-term storage on magnetic tapes).
Therefore, temporary data should not be stored her in disorder, before sorting, renaming, and reorganization at a later date.
Indeed, the following night, the new data will be replicated a second time.
The following weekend, the new data will be replicated a third time on tapes for a very long period of time.
- From FileZilla, you must connect as follows
- server : micro2store -- protocol : SFTP -- port : 22
- login and password: those from your IJM account
- In the right-hand panel (destination space)
- DO NOT WRITE anything in the root folder
- go to the DATA folder dedicated to your team...
- ... then to the exact subfolder you want
- see above: it is important to place the data directly in the right place. cf plus haut : il est important de placer directement les données au bon endroit
- Then you can start the transfer from the microscope PC (on the left side of the screen) to the previously selected folder.
III - From one's PC/Mac in the office
- If you have placed your data in the temporary space, you can access it in exactly the same way as from the microscope PC.
Many software programs (FileZilla, WinSCP, Cyberduck, rsync, etc.) can be used. Recent versions of FileZilla are available HERE.
- If you have stored your data on the secure IJM's store servers (store1,2,3,...), you can access it as usual.
No new transfers are required.
